Fortunate / Filling
This work explores cultural translation through food, migration and everyday consumption. It brings together Chinese dumplings and fortune cookies—visually similar forms with very different cultural histories. Although Fortune cookies do not originating from traditional Chinese food culture, they are closely related to Chinese cuisine Made as hollow white ceramic objects and displayed in glass jars on a dining table, the forms shift between food, domestic object and cultural commodity. Their emptiness suggests how cultural identities and practices can be continually filled, adapted and reshaped through migration, consumption and exchange.
